Kuenta i Tambu: Santa Electra

Kuenta i Tambu is known for their unique blend of Curaçao’s traditional sound with today’s electronic beats. As the end of the year approaches marking Curaçao’s tambu season, Basserk Records just released KiT’s video for their new (super sick!) track Santa Electra – definitely one of my favorite KiT songs already (if not my favorite thus far)!

Santa Electra

“Santa Electra, please clear our paths from evil. If you can’t come to help us, please empower us so we can help ourselves.”

Santa Electra is a fictitious Saint who we are singing to in this song. After many bad things happening lately we call to Santa Electra to send us some positivity, wisdom and a clear vision over the future. We hope she can hear us through the vibration of the drumming and dancing.

This song has been written in the traditional Tambú style by Kuenta i Tambu’s frontman and producer Roël Calister. The vocals are sung by singer Elia Isenia, who Roël considers to be one of the best Tambú singers of Curacao. Roël together with producer and partner in crime Clifford Goilo a.k.a. Rusted Braces later adapted the song to the Kuenta i Tambu standards, transforming it into a real Tambutronic tune.

In the music video the director Selwyn de Wind flirts with the idea of the Tambú song being part of a Montamentu ceremony. For the Afro-Caribbean people this ceremony stands as a complex source of empowerment providing connections to individually and remembered pasts. Tambú is used to serve as an accompaniment for the religion Montamentu, which nowadays is very scarce and very difficult to find or trace on the islands.

Santa Electra is available on Beatport right now.

Kuenta i Tambu

Inspired by traditional Afro Caribbean Music from Curaçao and European Dance, Kuenta i Tambu has created a brand new sound. They have found a unique balance between electronic sound samples, singing and chanting with infectious rhythms played by ritual Tambú drums. Some call it Global Bass, others prefer labelling it Tambutronic but one thing is for sure, it’s a wild and colorful explosion of energy and always seems to set off some serious movement on the dance floor! Kuenta i Tambu performances stand for high energy shows, with hypnotising beats and dazzling percussive interplay between the band members.

Kuenta i Tambu have been performing all over the world, with shows at international venues and festivals such as Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (New York City), The Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.), Pitch Festival (Amsterdam), GlobalFEST (New York City), The Great Escape (Brighton), SXSW (Austin), Fusion Festival (Berlin), Eurosonic/Noorderslag (Groningen) and the Amsterdam Dance Event. They have supported acts like Major Lazer and Chrystal Fighters.
